Major technology decisions rarely affect just one system.
Great Erie Federal Credit Union saw that firsthand when an approaching core decision became an opportunity to take a broader look at its technology environment, vendor relationships and future needs. That called for a better contract strategy.
The $152 million credit union had relied on its existing core for years, but the platform was limiting access to products, integrations and digital capabilities, both leadership and members increasingly wanted. When a core migration became necessary, Great Erie FCU chose not to simply follow the path recommended by its existing vendor. Instead, leadership used the transition as an opportunity to evaluate the broader marketplace and turned to ADVANTAGE for the expertise and perspective to help guide those decisions.
That broader perspective proved valuable.
Working with ADVANTAGE, the credit union evaluated its technology and contracts across five areas: core, digital banking, card processing, PIN network and card brand. The engagement included technology and contract assessment, vendor evaluation, pricing and market benchmarking, and contract negotiation.
The result was more than a new technology platform.
Great Erie FCU achieved $2,335,393 in documented savings and benefits across the five contract areas, while also expanding capabilities available to members, strengthening a key vendor relationship and improving alignment across major contract timelines.
For President/CEO Robyn Young, one of the biggest takeaways was the value of having experienced outside perspective during a complex decision.
“We met so many helpful people at ADVANTAGE during our search for the right core processor. You find out that what you don’t know is a lot.”
Expertise and insight especially matter beyond a core conversion. Financial institutions often have knowledgeable internal teams and years of experience managing vendor relationships themselves. But major technology and contract decisions can reveal market intelligence, pricing benchmarks, negotiation dynamics and interconnected agreements that are difficult to see from inside one institution.
As Great Erie FCU’s experience demonstrates, bringing in specialized support can help leadership ask stronger questions, compare options more objectively and create greater negotiating leverage before long-term decisions are made. The full case study explores how Great Erie approached the process, where the value was created and what the engagement ultimately meant for the credit union’s technology strategy.
